Do reusable nappies leak more?

Modified on Mon, 7 Jul at 4:37 PM

Many parents feel a little unsure about leaks when switching to reusables, but the good news is, our cloth nappies are just as reliable as disposables when fitted and used properly.

Here's how to get the best leak protection:

1. Give them a good wash first

Before their first use, pop your nappies in the wash 1–3 times. This helps activate and build up their absorbency.

2. Get the fit right

A snug (but not too tight) fit is key. You should be able to slide two fingers into the waistband. Sit the back low and pull the front up high before securing the hook & loop tabs. For smaller babies, aim for the nappy to cover their belly button. Don’t forget to tuck the leg cuffs into the creases - this helps stop sneaky leaks.

3. Change every 2–4 hours

Every baby is different, but as a general guide we recommend changing your reusable nappy every 2–4 hours during the day. You’ll get to know what works best for your little one.

4. Boost for longer wear

Need extra absorbency for nap time or overnight? Our slimline, super-thirsty boosters are your best friend. Simply lay one (or two for heavy wetters) inside the nappy. For boys, position more at the front; for girls, more in the middle.
